Couple Pleads Guilty to Online Line Gambling Charges
March 17, 2007 – 3:40 pmHusband and wife, Daniel Clarin, 32, Melissa Clarin, 31, of Miami, pleaded guilty last Thursday to felony charges (in a Queens NY courthouse) to participating in an operation that processed bets through offshore computer servers and the Web site Playwithal.com.
The couple helped to operate a $1.4 billion /year online gambling business. The judge is likely to give Daniel Clarin 2 1/3 to seven years in prison when he is sentenced in April. While his wife will have to also forfeit $254,356. Without getting jail time Clarin will also have to forfeit $72,508 in illegal earnings.Prosecutors claimed the couple used a combination of old school bookies and new technology to take bets from tens of thousands of customers.
Twenty seven defendants, from New York, New Jersey, Florida and Nevada, were charged in the case last year following a two-year probe. The man charged with leading the ring, a professional poker player named James Giordano, is Melissa Clarin’s father. He has pleaded innocent and is awaiting trial.
